THE MTHUNZI & LILANDA INITIATIVE (MALI)

The Mthunzi & Lilanda Initiative is a Scottish Charity bringing young Zambians and Scots togther. The project supports the education of youngsters in Zambia and arranges exchange visits. These young Zambians live at the Mthunzi Centre outside Lusaka, the Zambian capital. ‘Mthunzi’ means shelter, and that’s what the centre offers vulnerable youngsters. MALI came about after Marian Pallister, a Scottish journalist living in Argyll, visited Zambia with the charity Christian Aid to attend a major HIV/AIDS conference. |

Introduced to Fr Dario Chaves in Lilanda, she made many more visits to help the Catholic radio station produce educational programmes. Staying in Lilanda, she was there when Fr Dario set up St Joseph’s school, and she was the first English-speaking friend of Mthunzi - and was invited to bring more friends.

She did, and the result was the support of very generous people in Argyll and the Isles and elsewhere in Scotland and Ireland. The Charity pay school fees, and organises exchange visits, and are currently in the process of establishing a library of African literature. |
